Marvelous Mardi Gras

Today is the beginning of the Mardi Gras celebration.
In French, Mardi means Tuesday, and Gras means fat, so it stands for "Fat Tuesday."
This is a practice of eating richer foods before the fasting for the traditional Lenten season.

Mardi Gras is usually celebrated in New Orleans, Louisiana with a carnival. People build large floats and parade down the main street, giving out beaded necklaces.

As a team, students build Mardi Gras floats in class.

We also enjoyed traditional King Cake, flown in from New Orleans. A big thank you to Mrs. Blumel who came and taught us about Mardi Gras and provided the cake, supplies, and pizza.

Hidden inside the King Cake is a small trinket. Traditionally it used to be a bean. The person or persons who found the bean would be in charge of hosting the next year's festivities.

What was your favorite activity?

Did you get the trinket from the cake?

    Dear Class,
This is Charlotte and Skyler and were going talk about Mardi Gras. Skyler what did you like about this holiday? I liked building the floats. My table mate Ashlynne got a golden baby. A golden baby is a meaning of getting to start the next year. Our theme was rainbow dolphins cubs. Charlotte what did you like about Mardi Gras? Well Skyler I liked when we got to make the floats. I made a money float with 100$ around it with gold.

    What was your float?

  2. Hi class,

I like Mardi Gras because we get to make floats. Each table got one shoe box and we get to decorate it with necklaces, feathers and paint. Our table [table six] made a very cool float that was black and had necklaces that went from the bottom to the top. I had lots of fun decorating. I made wheels on the float but they were not real wheels, they were just cardboard wheels. I really liked the french toast bread cake that we ate where the babies were inside. I thought it was a great surprise that we got cake and pizza. I really enjoyed making the floats most of all. I also liked the cake very much. Do you like Mardi Gras?

  3. Hi Class,

We think Mardi Gras is amazing because when you eat cake you can find a baby. We had 2 baby's in each cake. It was awesome!
We had a great time at the party and we did not know it stands for Fat Tuesday which is kinda funny because everybody laughs at this word fat so it is kind of a laugh. I wonder why it is called Fat Tuesday in English.

    Sincerely,
    Lenore & Skyler
