We have been learning about opinion writing from our district writing TOSA, Mrs. Andrews. Here is what we've learned.
A fact is true. A fact can be proven through research and/or by using your own eyes to verify.
An opinion is what a person thinks or believes. It cannot be proven. When stating an opinion, it is important to have reasons to support your opinion.
2. How should you begin writing an opinion piece?
Mrs. Andrew recommends making a list of all the reasons that support an opinion. Here is a surprising opinion about Disneyland with a list of reasons.
3. What should you do with your list of reasons?
Choose your top three reasons for your opinion writing piece. The most important reason should be your last reason.
Then come up with support sentences for your reasons. Explain your reasons. Give examples.
4. Write a first draft of your opinion.
The easiest part for many was coming up with reasons. The hardest part was supporting each reason. Many students ended up writing a paragraph made up of reasons.

As a class, we listed all the reasons to love the Daily 5.

Next, students wrote their own opinion rough drafts using the color-coded paper. Once the color coded paper was approved by Ms. Tulbure, students went in and typed their opinion piece in Google Classroom.
Students used this chart with useful words and phrases to give the opinion piece the final touches.

I think opinion is great because you can tell people your feelings and more. If you are feeling sad or maybe you are happy you can write about it. If you think something is bad or good you can write it.

I do not like the opinion essay. First, I do not like writing. For example it is hard to keep thinking of different ideas for your story. It is complicated to think of so many different topics. Next, it is hard. It is hard because it is not easy for me to type. For example, I struggle with the keyboard and finding all the letters quickly. This makes me very slow. I find making the claim statement the easiest part of finding ideas and writing. The most difficult thing about opinion writing is explaining myself and finding support. In conclusion, I do not find opinion writing enjoyable!

I have a little feeling that a lot of people think that this was hard. I feel that you should look up something in a Scholastic News and write your opinion on that. ReplyDeleteThe opinion essay was I think the first essay we’ve had. Anyways, it was hard for me to do this and that and this and that. I had unfinished work and the essay, so I had to do things one at a time. I think “one at a time” is not the best choice of words. The essay’s hardest part was writing it down on paper because there was three papers to write one reason and the supports. The easiest on the other hand, was writing it on your acer. Well I really enjoyed writing our opinion writing letters. I enjoyed it because it was a great way to express your feelings and see if people agree with you or disagree. I sometimes even disagree with myself because maybe you blog post convinced me to actually like right now. I enjoyed writing opinion writing but some of the other blog posts convinced me to change my mind. So now I am changing my mind and I am disagreeing with myself. I did not enjoy writing these opinion letters because it takes to much time off our other important work. First Time I Caught a Shark
One misty Sunday morning, my grandparents and I WERE fishing in Oxnard beach. It was very EARLY in the day and the GOLDEN sun was not yet peeking out of the WHITE and PUFFY clouds. That morning on the beach It THOUGHT what could I catch today, so when my grandfather set the clear line in the ocean, I did the same thing after him. When my line was in the GREENISH BLUE water, I felt a LITTLE tug but I knew that is was just the current pulling the STURDY, clear line. After some time of PATIENTLY standing and fishing, my grandfather all of a sudden started to QUICKLY real his line in. My mind was RACING with INTERESTING thoughts of what fish did my grandfather catch. But as the line came in sight I realized that it was just a BIG FAT GLOB of TANGLED seaweed. Out of nowhere my line JOLT so hard that my jaws almost flew out. I started to QUICKLY pull in the line. Even though I am STRONG this fish was making me STRUGGLE.
Finally, a THRASHING baby lemon shark came into view. I THOUGHT how EXCITING it would be to hold it in my hands and examine it. When I got it out of the water I held it in my SOFT and MOIST hands for a little bit and tossed is CAREFULLY back into the ocean.

ReplyDeleteI am going to tell you about my dogs. Teddi and Tyger are very sweet. They both like to play and fight, and sometimes they sleep during the day. Tyger sleeps the most, and Teddi sleeps the least. Teddi is as fluffy as a cloud, and Tyger is as lazy as a sloth. If you were wondering what my dog's breed is they are both German Shepherds. German Shepherds are not swimming dogs and they don’t shed a lot. Are your pets like mine? Explain why your pets are like mine or why not.

ReplyDeleteLast spring break I went on a one week cruise to Western Carribean. There I did many activities like snorkeling, swimming, and climbing. When I went snorkeling in Honduras, I explored the amazing coral filled ocean. After that, for the grand finale, we came to the stop where we saw an abondoned, spooky, and sunken ship. At Belize we ventured right into the rainforest where the temperture was mugy, hot, and rainy. There we saw the ancient Altun-Ha pyramids, and also we sometimes saw baby crocodiles that were warming up in the blazing sun. Then, when we entered the huge ocean, my sister and I saw a big and plump seacow swimming lazily in the blue waves. In Mexico we snorkeled and saw a lobster that was as big as a human body. Then I went climbing on a palm tree that was shady and green with many white and fuzzy coconuts on it. After that, I went to the playground that was floating atop the peaceful water filled with hundreds of kids of all sizes. There I played with a friend of mine on the climbing part, and I almost made it to the top of it.
I really hope I can go to those three places again because I really liked the trip.

Did you know that I once caught a fish stronger than even the stunt men in the circus? Well I experienced this moment in Big Bear and it all started when my clear blue fishing line whipped me and my pole jeared.
All of a sudden I quickly ran to my fishing pole and rapidly started to string in to shore. I wondered what might this strong fish be. I said “I will bring the fish to the shore.” Then my sister caught something on her line so she rapidly stringed the fish to the shore. My fish was so big when I realed it in close in of to see. My eyes were bulging when I saw the fish I had caught.

When I was in my room I was watching the telly (TV) and I saw a Champions league game which is a football league. The Champions league game was Real Madrid vs Manchester City and Real Madrid is a team from Madrid, Spain and Manchester City is a team from Manchester, England. When I was watching the game, I saw Joe Hart ( a Goalkeeper for Manchester City) save a fantastic goal and I realized that when Ben,my dad and I go down to our school and we play football and when I play as GK (Goalkeeper), I could be just like him because he is my favorite GK and when me,my dad and Ben go down to our school I jump a lot in GK and sometimes Ben calls me Jumpy Jack.
