Place Value Palaces!

Today, we read The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs! It was a very funny book told for the point-of-view, or perspective, of the wolf. In both stories, the pigs build homes or dwellings. For math, we built our own structures using ones, tens, and hundreds. It was a fun way to practice place value!

On an index card we wrote each part of the house and the number of units used (bricks). We also had a challenge to round the sum of all the units to the nearest hundred.

Check out some of our mansions, school houses, and modern three dimensional homes and calculations below

What was the value of your house? Was it odd or even?
Which dwelling do you like the most and why?

What is the value? Is it even or odd?

  2. Hi there. I had such a great time building my residential house with wooden blocks.
My house had five hundred twenty six units in it, 526 is an even number. I like my
dwelling the most because I put in many details in it. Did you have a good time building your house? What other materials to build with at home?
    Sincerely,
    Mark M.

    1. @ Mark,

Wow, what a detailed writer you are! I especially love the vocabulary words you are using such as dwelling.

I read that your house was built out of 526 units total. That sounds like a gargantuan home! You mentioned this was because you put many details in it. What were some of those details you added to your residence?

      Warmly,
      Ms. Tulbure

  3. Dear Ms. Tulbure,

This is Maya and John-Paul. We had a lot of fun building our three dimensional house. It was fascinating constructing our two-story home.

I, Ben found this project to involve much creativity and I also liked building with LEGO as well. Building with LEGO was helpful with this project.

Did you enjoy building your house? What type of house did you build?

    Kindly,
    Students from Ms. Tulbure's class

    1. @ Kiley,

I'm so excited that you're blogging! I love the way you described how you felt about the project. How wonderful that you built a house that looks similar to your home.

You asked which dwelling I liked the most. I loved all the creative homes and all the hard work and perseverance the class put into their project.

How many units was your house made of?

      Warmly,
      Ms. Tulbure

  5. To Room Three,

I had a blast building my modern house! My number of bricks was eight hundred sixty-three, but when I rounded it to the nearest hundred it turned into nine hundred .

  6. Dear Ms. Tulbure,

I had such a great time building my wooden house because it was the first time I built a three dimensional house from wooden cubes. Building a wooden house was very creative and fun. Do you like building wooden houses?

    1. @ Ramin,

I'm so thrilled that you are blogging! What wonderful vocabulary you are using. I am excited to hear that you enjoyed building your three dimensional dwelling and that you were creative.

You asked if I like building wooden houses. My grandfather, who was an architect, gave me wooden blocks when I was seven years old. He taught me how to build different structures with the blocks and I always enjoyed creating new things.

What was the value of your dwelling?

      Kindly,
      Ms. Tulbure

  8. Dear Ms. Tulbure,

I'm sure that kids had great time with building something.
It looks like they did reading, art and math at once. It is really great way to learn place value!
