Welcome Back! 2015-2016

Welcome Back to the 2015-2016 New School Year!

Today was our first day of school!

We jumped right in and started our adventure!

In the morning, students and families lined up to meet the teacher and hear a few opening remarks from the principal.

In class, we began by getting to know each other through teamwork and games. We also put our physics and math skills to the test with our first STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) challenge:
The Spaghetti Challenge

It took teamwork and perseverance to make the marshmallow balance on top of the spaghetti tower.
Check out some of our work in the next four photos!

Great work!
What is perseverance
After recess, we opened up and categorized all the supplies. Later, students had fun "building" using the Kleenex boxes and the paper towels.

Magnificent balancing work!

This blog is the centerpiece of our classroom community. It is a wonderful space for sharing and learning together. Here is a link to an article Mrs. Yollis wrote about the benefits of classroom blogging. I hope you'll have a chance to read it before our Back to School Night.
Let's start blogging!

Students, please leave a comment telling us about yourself. What did you do over your summer break? What adventures and experiences did you enjoyed?

If you are one of our blogging buddies, please introduce yourself to my new class. Where are you from? What have you been up to?

    1. @ Sarah,

I'm so happy to see you are blogging! What a great writer you are! I noticed you capitalized your proper noun- San Diego. Who was your second grade teacher? I'd like to thank her for her outstanding student.

How exciting to have a new dog. What breed is your dog?

      Warmly,
      Ms. Tulbure

    2. Ms. Tulbure,
My second grade teacher was Ms. Fitzner. Thank you. It is exciting to have a new dog. My dog's breed is Standard Poodle. Do you have a dog? How was your Summer?

    3. @ Sarah,
Hi. I just read that you have a Standard Poodle. Guess what? I have one too. He is black and is always looking for lizards. My dog's name is Artie,
he is nine years old. My chore is to feed him and give him water.
What color is Kona? How do you take care of her?
      Sincerely,
      Mark M.

    4. @ Mark,

Hi! It's Sarah. And Kona is the color cream. I take care of her by: Taking her out to go to the bathroom. And she does not listen. But I try. Also sometimes I feed her. And she's crazy about it. And by the way Kona likes to lick ice and it's very strange. Does your dog like to lick ice? Well if he does, please reply back!!
      Sincerely, your classmate Sarah

  2. Over the summer I went to Tortola, Nassau and St. Thomas. Me and my family had a great time but mostly I did. I loved the stuff that we did which was zip lining, water slides and swimming with dolphins. We even got to see our cousins.

Welcome to the blog! I'm thrilled you have decided to leave such a wonderful comment. I noticed that just like Sarah, you are capitalizing proper nouns- St. Thomas. Well done!

Swimming with dolphins sounds exciting. How big were the dolphins?

      Kindly,

  3. Hi. Let me introduce myself. My name is Mark and I am eight years old. I am happy to be a third grader, although I do miss being on summer break. This summer I didn't travel much because of swim practices, but in August I went to Monterey Aquarium and Hearst Castle. I went to Hearst Castle first, and the next day I went to Monterey Aquarium. At Hearst Castle I saw many different marble sculptures. I also saw the indoor pool, it was ten feet deep. At Monterey Aquarium I observed a lot of interesting sea creatures. My favorite was the Tiger Shark. I liked when the shark attacked the duckling that was swimming above.
I had a great summer. How about you?

    1. @ Mark,

I am thrilled to see you blogging! What a great vocabulary you have. Observed is a high level vocabulary word. I love it!

You asked me how my summer was. I had a lovely summer visiting Vancouver, Canada. I crossed a 170 meter long suspension bridge that was as high as the Statue of Liberty. It was frightening.

You mentioned the Tiger Shark. Why is it called that?

      Warmly,
      Ms. Tulbure

    2. @ Ms. Tulbure,

Here is the answer to why Tiger sharks are called that why. These fascinating fish have light black stripes on both sides of their body, just like a tiger does. Tiger sharks are also known as "garbage eaters" because scientists often find man made objects in their stomachs. So,
      please, keep our oceans clean!
Actually, I made a mistake on my first blog. The shark that I saw at Monterey was a Leopard shark.

      Sincerely,
      Mark

  5. Hi my name is Sofia. I had a great time at camp. I went on a water slide and toboggan slide. It was the best.

  6. @ Sofia,

I'm so thrilled you are blogging! I love how you are using punctuation in your sentences. Great work!
Wow, your summer sounds fun! I have never been on a toboggan slide before but it sounds exciting. Can you tell me a little more about it? What does it look like?

    Kindly,
    Ms. Tulbure

    1. The toboggan slide was fun but you have to climb a hill and pull a raft up the hill. When I got up the hill, I had a fun trip down. I almost went backwards!

      Love,
      Sofia

  7. Hello, this is Anya. This summer I went to two different places, Hawaii and England. It was a LOT of fun. First, I went to Hawaii, these are the some of the highlights. It was very hot so we went snorkeling. There were tons of colorful fish and sea urchins. We also saw a Honu green sea turtle!

Now,I will talk about England. It was nice to see my family. I also touched a wild sheep because there were lots in the countryside . We went to Buckingham Palace to visit the Queen but unfortunately, she wasn't home but we did get to go inside. Did you know that the Palace has 78 bathrooms? How was your summer?

Hi Anya. I heard that you saw a Honu green sea turtle. I think it swims very
fast because you said, " LOOK, I see it,it's that GREEN ROCKET". When
you said about the green rocket I thought that it was the color green. But
then you explained that it was brown so now I now that it is not green but it's
brown. One day would like to see one to.

      Sincerely,
      Mark M.

    2. Hi Mark,

Thank you for your reply. I think you misunderstood me. I didn't say rocket I said rock because it looked like a rock on the beach. I have a picture of it so, when Ms Tulbure teaches us how to post photos I will show you it.

You mentioned in your other blog, the Leopard shark attacked a little duckling , did it get hurt?

      Kindly,
      Anya

You asked about how my summer was. It was exciting visiting Seattle, Washington and ascending to the top of the Space Needle observation tower. It is 520 feet from the ground. I could see all of Seattle from there!

You mentioned that in Hawaii you saw a Honu green sea turtle. What did it look like?

    1. Dear, Ms. Tulbure,

Thank you for the comment! My second grade teacher was Mrs. Clebanoff but she retired. I miss her. Anyway, you asked me what the Honu green sea turtle looked like. It was green with brown on it's shell. At first I couldn't see it because it was camouflaged and looked like a rock, but then I saw it and said "LOOK, I see it, it's that GREEN ROCK!". It was my first time seeing one. Did you find any surprises on your vacation?

      Warmly,
      Anya

    2. @ Anya,

Wow, I am impressed by your rich vocabulary. It must be difficult to see a camouflaged turtle in the ocean. When I visited Hawaii I too saw a sea turtle, however it was swimming away. I admired its beautiful green and brown shell.

You asked about my vacation. One surprising encounter was watching the fishmongers at Pike Place Market. The fisherman would throw the fish they caught that day across the way to each other. They caught them all!

In your post you mentioned visiting family in London, England. What was your favorite part of your trip to London?

      Delete
    3. I think you misunderstood me. The turtle was on the beach. That is why it looked like a rock.

In London my favorite part was the train because when I looked out the window I could see how fast I was going. The time before, I went on a steam train that was like the Hogwarts Express. I also liked the tube because the escalators so steep and long.

  9. Dear Ms.Tulbure,
Over the summer I went to Palm Desert and the first thing we did was go in the pool. At first I thought it would be scary to go on the water slide but then I found that it is so fun.
I went on it millions of times.
If you ever go to Palm Desert go on the water slide.
Have you ever been on a water slide?
    Sincerely,
    Maya

I have never been to Palm Springs before, but I would like to go. I think it would be fun to go on the water slide. I have been on the water slide in Mexico. I bet I would have fun on the water slide in Palm Springs. Is it scary? Has anybody else been on a water slide?
      Who went with you ?
      Sincerely,
      Abby

  10. Dear Room Three,
One year ago it was my sister's birthday and she wanted a dog. But she didn't get one she got a bunny instead. His name was Nibbles. He was white, gray, brown and a little bit of black. He was the cutest bunny ever. Then on a horrible day, my sister fed it and we went to school. When we got home she went to go feed it and he was dead. She came back in the house and said that she thought that the bunny was dead. I went outside to see and it was true. She started crying. It was the worst day of my life and also my sister's life.I was very sad. My dad said that tomorrow we will check to see if he was dead and have a funeral. My friend really loved the bunny so we invited him to the funereal. He was sad. We have a grave for the bunny in my side yard. Did you ever have a pet that means a lot to you?

    Your Classmate,
    Maya

  11. @ Maya,
I am so sorry. I almost cried. I have two dogs. One is a German Shepard, named Marlon, and the other is a Laborador Retriever, named Bailee. When I first met Marlon, we played fetch and went for walks for hours. When I first met Bailee, we did the same. I can't imagine what it must feel like having someone that you love and had for a year pass away. I'm sorry.
    Sincerely,
    Sammy
