November is Family Blogging Month!

Ms. Tulbure and her students  to share what they are learning and experiencing. In an effort to include more family members in our online community, we are proclaiming:

November is Family Blogging Month!

Each student made a list of their family members. After looking through the archive, students selected specific posts tailored to the interest of a particular relative.

We're inviting everyone to comment: moms, dads, brothers, sisters, grandmothers, grandfathers, uncles, aunts, and cousins.
We welcome friends and pets, too!

Students will be inviting their family and friends to participate in a conversation!
Maybe we'll get some 2-point comments

(We frequently evaluate the comments that our blog has received. In order to earn the 2-points, a comment must be error-free and add something to the post.   Many of Ms. Tulbure's third graders have already met the challenge!)

If you don't know what to say, here is a video made by Mrs. Yollis' third graders.

Learn FIVE tips for writing a quality comment!

If you don't know How to leave a comment, here is a video tutorial about HOW to leave a comment on our blog.

Here is the key we will use for  Family Blogging Month.

What do you think of our idea?

Who are you inviting to be a part of our online community?

Hi. This is Dylan's mom Meredith. I am very excited for Blogging month. Dylan wants to invite his brothers, cousins, aunts and uncles to blog this month. When his older brother was in third grade, he won a free meal at a restaurant because he had the most blog posts for the entire month in his class. We are going to try to exceed the number of posts we did back then. Wish us luck! This is a great project.

      Jake,
What restaurant did you get to go to for your free meal? I often find that free food taste just a little but better than food you have to pay for. And don't even get me started on free candy.

  2. Hi my name is Dylan.I think blogging is fun and not because there is a competition but there is many more reasons for example it is fun to have a conversation with people around the whole world.Second reason is you could learn about stuff they say.Its also fun because there many people that could say nice things and respond to you.Bloggers most times respond to people and have a long conversation and it could go on and on it could take forever anyone.I think that this is why blogging is fun.

    2. Hi Dylan,
I think your right. Like you said "not because their is a competition ". It's also fun because you can talk about yourself , learn about other people and find topics that you both like. There are some competitions tough like the Family Blogging Month, but still that doesn't mean you should do it only to win but, to have fun while your doing it! Do you you agree with me ? Sorry I don't have a long or very interesting comment, but I want to go write some other comments . BBBBBBBYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEE!

  4. Hi this is Tyler again! I am going fishing with my Dad and brother today at Fisherman’s village. We are going to catch a ton of fish. Last time we caught over 35 fish. We asked the guys that work at the dock to skin and clean the fish. We brought them home and ate them. This type of fish is called a Bonito. It is in the tuna family of fish. It was really good! I will send another post later. I hope I catch a lot of fish today.

    Sincerely,
    Tyler

Hi Tyler. This is Dylan's mom Meredith. How do you get the fish home and once they are home, how do you cook them? Do you eat all 35 at once or can you freeze them? Is it hard to catch fish? Dylan and I tried once but the fish seemed really smart and kept eating the sausage bait and swimming away. Has that ever happened to you?

    2. Hi Tyler. This is Dylan. I have been fishing a few times but never at Fisherman's Village. Where is it located? Have you ever skinned and cleaned the fish by yourself or do you always have the guys at the dock do it? What does a Bonito fish taste like? I can't wait to see a picture of the fish you caught.

    3. Hi Meredith-
I use lures because they do not bite your bait because it is plastic.I did not eat the mullet because it tastes like where they live.I would love to show a picture but I can not because I will get in trouble. And yes I do let the dock guy skin it.We put the fish in a cooler because if we put it somewhere that is hot it won't taste good.We fry it on the stove for 2 minutes on each side.It kind of tastes like chicken. Yes, that happened to me once because you probably had a big fish. Big fish have bigger brains. It is hard because small fish are faster than big fish because small fish weigh less than big fish.

      Sincerely,
      Tyler

Hi Tyler. I didn't realize that big fish had bigger brains. About what size are the Bonito fish? The ones I was trying to catch were probably like a foot long. I wonder if that is considered big.

I eat fish a lot for dinner. I usually bake it in the oven with lemon and garlic.

What is your favorite fish to eat?

    5. Hi Tyler , This is Belana , I think fishing sounds loads of fun . I went fishing before with my grandpa when I was little . We caught a huge fish back then . It weighed as heavy as a small car . I forgot what kind of fish it was , but I remember that it was kind of a grayish color . How big was the fish you caught ? was it heavy , how heavy was it ?

Perhaps Ms. Tulbure can have all of her students take a picture with their pet and bring it to show and tell.

      Hello John and Class,

Today, November 10th is Marine Corps Birthday. November 10, 2017 marks 242 years of the United States Marine Corp. There are many celebrations honoring Marines all over the world today. The day is celebrated with a large, traditional ball, which is a dance, and cake-cutting ceremony. One interesting fact, although the Marines are 242 years old, they did not accept the recruits of African Americans until 1947. Today, approximately 20% of the Marines are African American.

      Sincerely,
      Elbert

For example, she would change the curtains in the class to have panda bears if they were studying Asia. She would also paint her nails to match the unit they were studying.

What do you like about Mrs. Shipow's class?

Hi to all the kids in Ms. Tulbere's class. I am enjoying to read all your thoughts and things you did. When my daughter was in 3rd grade, we lived in Brazil, and her class had a blog too. I love traveling around the world and meeting new kids. It is always interesting to see how kids love the same games and activities. For me it feels that our world is like a one huge country.

    Enjoy your childhood.

      Hello Cyrus,

At least one Sunday a month, we will BBQ steak in our backyard. Brooke's dad is in charge of the steak and myself, Brooke and her sisters are in charge of the side items. We usually have baked potatoes, corn on the cob and baked beans. Brooke often requests that I make devil eggs as well. It is a very big meal. We usually use Tri-Tip or Filet Mignon steak. When we have this meal, Brooke's dad makes a sauce using Teriyaki sauce, A1 and Italian salad dressing. Everyone loves the sauce. We have never bought steak at Costco before, so thanks for the suggestion. Brooke and her sisters love to go to Costco for the food samples. Have you ever tried the food samples? If so, can you remember any favorites?

Hope to hear from you soon,
      Michelle

  28. Hi Ms. Tulbure's class. This is Nicole, Vanderlei's mom. I also have a daughter Cattleya who is in Mrs. Shipow's class. People often ask where the names Vanderlei Jedi and Cattleya Jade come from and mean. Well here are the answers... Vanderlei is a Brazilian name, and there is a Jiu Jitsu fighter Vanderlei Silva that he is named after. Jedi is from Star Wars and they are the holy peace keepers of the Universe. Cattleya is a beautiful fragrant orchid originating from Costa Rica. Jade is a gem which is said to bless whatever it touches.
And I am Nicole Mia. My parents just liked those names!

We got to see Vanderlei fight in person once. Do you take any Jiu Jitsu classes? I am sure if you do the teachers, love your name as well. I hope you share your middle name often. Your parents are super cool for giving you an awesome name like Jedi. Are you a big Star Wars fan?

In the last two years, I have watched her play and practice, and she has inspired me to want to play softball too. My mom has signed me up for a clinic and I am looking forward to it. One tip that I think you should focus on is when you are hitting to watch the ball all the way to your bat. I have thought about you playing softball a lot and I have decided that I would love it if you were on my team. I think a good team name would be Cranky Crushers. Can anyone else think of any cool team names that they would like to share?

    Hello Ms. Tulbure and class,

This is Brooke's grandmother, many of you probably remember me as I volunteer for your class in the library, art room and for special events such as the Halloween Party. This month is November and we celebrate Thanksgiving with a feast. Did you know that the first Thanksgiving holiday was celebrated in the year 1621 when the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag Indians gathered for a harvest feast? For two hundred years, Thanksgiving was celebrated by states and colonies; however, in 1863, President Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving a national holiday. Most people in America serve turkey at their Thanksgiving day feasts but I have several friends from different cultures that serve different foods. What kind of foods are served at your Thanksgiving day feasts? I hope all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

      Hello Grandma Doreene,

This your daughter, Michelle. We will be serving turkey, mash potatoes, stuffing, green bean casserole, and a whole lot more. As you know, November is a special month in our family, as we take this time to really be thankful for everything that we have. In the past, we have even tried to give 'A Thanks A Day.' We would take cookies to our local fire department, write a special note of thanks and leave it in our mailbox for our postal worker, send personal letters of thanks to family members and the military. My daughter, Kate, even wrote a letter of thanks to the President of the United States and received a response.

I encourage you all to write a 'Note of Thanks' this month. Who would you write a special note of thanks to and why?

      Thankful,

Also in fifth grade, you are the oldest on the playground and you get to do whatever you want. You say that you can't wait until fifth grade but take your time because it goes by too fast. We named her after Latigo canyon in Malibu as Tyler’s Dad is a cyclist and that is his favorite place to ride! Latigo is an English Cream Golden Retriever. Her color is white like snow! She is 10 months old, so almost 6 years old in dog years! That would mean she could go to first grade! Gordie is too old for school. He would be a good Grandpa! As Brooke can tell you, I live in Germany in a city called Hamm. It is an old city, founded in the year 1226. Another old city, not too far from Hamm, I like to visit is Bremen. Bremen is even older than Hamm. It was founded in the 8th Century. You might have heard of Bremen if you have read the story: the Town Musicians of Bremen. There is a statue in that town of the Bremen Town Musicians. I gave Brooke a mini statue which she can share with the class. Has anyone in the class been to Germany? Has anyone read the story the Bremen Town Musicians? Right now, it is almost 1:30 a.m. on Friday Morning, and you all should be snug in your beds on this school night. Germany is 9 hours ahead of you.

Good Morning Ms. Tulbure and her class,

My name is Krystle and I am Brooke's cousin. I moved from California and now I live in Oregon. I have a small doxidor (Dachshund/Labrador mix) named Sammy who loves going on hikes and trips with me! November is one of my favorite months of the year. The leaves change to pretty orange, red, and pink colors.

In September I took a vacation to Italy, Monaco, and France. I ate a lot of pasta, pizza and sweets. My favorite place was Cinque Terre. The people are very friendly, the water is bright turquoise, and you hike to all 5 cities.

I cannot wait for the holidays. I get to see all of my family and eat great food! Since I live in Oregon, I am driving down with Sammy. This will be the first time my puppy meets a lot of my family. I will make a couple of stops at In-N-Out on my way home. Do you travel during the holidays? If so, where, how and what do you love about the places you go?

      Hi Austin,

My father, Elbert fought in Vietnam. He was only 18 at the time. Last month he went to a dinner celebration in Washington D.C. with some other men that fought in the Vietnam war along side him. Have you ever gotten to read any of the articles that your grandfather wrote for the paper?

      Interested,

I like history it because it tells you how things happen, how things were made, and it tells what happened in the past. For example: the first Thanksgiving started like this. Some people called the Pilgrims sailed to a land where Indians lived but some died because the Pilgrims didn't know how to survive! but soon the Indians helped them get food, make homes, and pretty much everything you need to survive . Which made the first Thanksgiving that's why I like history because it teaches you things that happened.

Have you ever read the books called "What is" and then there is a thing after it- like What is the Statue of Liberty or What is Ellis Island? Those are great books to read and they tell the history of something.

What do you think the Pilgrims ate at their first Thanksgiving? Do you think it was turkey like we eat today?

Did you decorate the house for the holidays? Do you decorate for Christmas, Hanukah or both?

    Happy 'Almost' December!

This is the last week of November, already. The day after Thanksgiving, our family writes their Christmas List. We write down something we want, need, wear and read. It makes shopping easy and everyone gets a least one thing they really want. Does your family exchange gifts? If so, how do you communicate to your loved ones what you are wishing for this Holiday season.

    Happy Holidays,

    Michelle

      Hi Laura,

I have to share with you El Capitan Canyon. I took my family Glamping there and it was amazing. It is a bit of a drive but definitely worth it. It is just outside of Santa Barbara, right across from the beach. One of Brooke's highlights from the trip was seeing the deers right outside our door. She did get chased by a skunk but thankfully it didn't spray.

Q: How much money does a skunk have? A: One scent!

      Take Care,

  59. Hello,My name is Tyler.I went hiking in the Los Angeles area with my dad and my brother. We saw hills and we went to see waterfalls and an old house that was built around 1904. It was still fully standing. When we got back in the car we realized that we hiked 4.2 miles! That is a lot of miles. Then we got tamales. I got a chicken one and my dad got a spicy one. He had to put on a green and red sauce. In Mexico they called it Christmas sauce because the colors was green and red. When you went hiking what did you see? Sincerely, Tyler

    1. Dear Tyler,

I think I went hiking in the same place as you because I saw a waterfall and a house on my last hike also. Was it near the beach? We also saw an old fire place that was still standing. There was also an old swimming pool that was filled with dirt.

Over Thanksgiving break, I walked over 21,000 steps a day in New York city which is over 9 miles. I know how many steps I took because we have a Fit Bit that measures it. Do you have one too?

What is a tamale? I don't think that I have ever had them before.

      Sincerely,

We were in New York and it was freezing. We had to wear our ski clothes to keep warm. We were not used to the cold weather.

Did your family from New York like the warm weather in Florida?

I showed off my pets. Guests took the videos and photos of my chameleon and dog. We went to bed late. We were full because we all ate a lot of delicious food. I had a great time and I was so tired.

Your Thanksgiving Holiday sounded like it was a major success. I think that it is awesome that your dad cooked the turkey. Did you take notes so that you will be able to cook a turkey for your family when you grow up? Does everyone come back over for the December Holidays? If so, maybe you can make a special dish on your own.

  65. Hi everyone,
For Thanksgiving break I went to Georgia and Florida to be with my mom's family. I went to Disney World with my cousins for two days. We went to Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios. My favorite park from our trip was Magic Kingdom because of the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Space Mountain. The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is a roller coaster that takes you over mountains and down into a cave where the seven dwarfs are working to get jewels. It is fast and very fun! Space Mountain is a roller coaster in the dark with little lights and it seems like you are in outer space. It is very fast and has sudden drops. I really enjoyed my Thanksgiving break at Disney World.
Have you been to Disney World?

Our family has never been to Disney World, just Disneyland. I was wondering if Disney World is better, the same or a lot different than Disneyland? One of my favorite rides is Space Mountain. Have you been on Space Mountain at Disneyland? If so, is it fairly the same? If not, how is it different?

      Looking forward to your reply,

  68. Hello class,
This Thanksgiving I went to New York with my family. When we got to the airport, we flew Virgin America. Our flight was five hours long. I watched Captain Underpants and Diary of a Wimpy Kid The Long Haul. I went with my mom and dad, sisters, my aunt and uncle, and my two cousins. We stayed at the Park Central Hotel in New York. We went to a lot of shopping places. I got a shirt that says "I love NY." I went with my cousins and my sister to the Museum. That's where they shot the Night at the Museum. It was 42 degrees when we went. My trip to New York was great and fun and I had a great time.

  70. Hi class, it is Rebecca.I made a pinewood derby car. This is how I made my derby car. It started as a brick. I started carving but I had a little help carving so I don't cut my finger off. My dad's friend helped me. Next, I sanded it. I sand it without help. Also, you paint it. I painted it silver. Finally, you get a number when you get to the race. They check your car and it has to be 5 ounces and then you are in the race. There are themes. Some of them are cub scouts, girl scouts, siblings, and adults.

  75. Dear Ms. Tulbure ,
I miss you guys a lot, but I made lots of new friends at my new school.
My new teacher is Mrs. Rients, and they only have 3 3rd grade classrooms so there is less students.
My school is adjacent to a park so there is a bigger playground and more space to play.
I learned how to type all the letters on the keyboard and the whole cursive alphabet.
we finished reading a book called The one and only Ivan, I'm sure you heard of it.
Also we just today finished reading a book called The Tale of Desparux Tilling.
Right now we are learning how to compare fractions.

In class we are doing the same thing, exchanging Valentines.

    Happy Valentines Day!
