Hour of Code

Hour(s) of Code!

Hour of Code is an annual event to promote Computer Science. According to their website:

The Hour of Code takes place each year during Computer Science Education Week. The 2017 Computer Science Education Week will be December 4-10, but you can host an Hour of Code all year round. Computer Science Education Week is held annually in recognition of the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (December 9, 1906).
We're starting Hour of Code and changing the name to Hours of Code!

Thank you, Hadi Partovi for creating this project!

To prepare for our coding lessons, we did a collaborative unplugged activity involving building. The challenge was to build a free-standing tower out of 20 pieces of spaghetti. At the top of the tower was a marshmallow. Only 1 meter of tape and 1 meter of string were allowed to create the tower.

This building challenge was a great chance to practice the strategy of trial and error. If your design didn't work, try another tactic!

In preparation, we watched a building video on BrainPop.

Then it was time to start building!

Some spread out the sticks for a broad base

The pyramid base was an idea from the BrainPop video!

After about 18 minutes, the building time was up!

1st Place :: 22 inches

2nd Place :: 20in

3rd Place :: 17 in

Everyone enjoyed the first build!

After learning about the importance of trial and error, the class signed into our Hour of Code class.

We needed our secret image to sign in! What a cute array!

Let the coding begin!

What are you enjoying about the Hour of Code?

What skills have you learned?

What can you do with coding?

  1. Hi everyone I'm Belana ,
    I liked coding it helps us learn lots of interesting ways to code on our Acers . Do you like coding ? Have you ever done it before ?

  2. Hi class , This is Belana .
    Today we learned about the Titanic . You all probably watched the movie , but I haven't . Can you maybe tell me a little more about it in the reply section below ? I learned that the Titanic hit an iceberg and the engine broke , but their were only 20 life boats so only half of the passengers/crew members could fit . Luckily a rescue ship called the Carpathia brought home the 705 survivors . Did you you know that ?

  4. Hour of code is fun yet challenging and we all worked hard to go to the next level with the angry birds to the tiny animal from ice age . We all had fun coding and learning new things about hour of code I hope we do it soon ,

    1. Dear Alexa , I also worked hard and now I'm on the Bee challenges and it's very fun ! The Bee has to get to the flowers and collect the nectar and go back to the hive . I hope you work hard and get there soon . Are you on it yet?

  5. I had a very fun time doing the spaghetti challenge. Maybe we could come out on the top next time. I think we had a hard time listening and sharing tools. Does anyone have any tips for me? If you do, I would love to hear them. Though we had a hard time, I think we did good at thinking of an idea. When ours fell apart it felt like my heart was going to jump out of my chest. My heart sounded like it was beating on a loud drum.

    1. Dear Brooke
      I think next time you should listen to your team and don't interrupt each other also you shouldn't rush and make a plan first . My team was listening to each other and we made a tower , but it wasn't the tallest. Maybe you have some tips for me I would love to hear them .

    2. Dear Belana,

      I really liked your how you were positive during the challenge one tip I have for you is that you should not worry about time but or winning just about how you want to build your tower

  7. Hello, this is Danuta, Rebecca's mom. I was listening to TED Talk by Tom Wujec and he made the same spaghetti/marshmallow tower experiments with different groups such as CEOs, lawyers, recent MBA graduates and kindergartens. Can you guess who built the tallest tower? Kindergartens!

    The reason they outperform all these educated adults is that they make a lot of trial and errors. The other groups plan and strategize and wait until the end to put the marshmallow in and their tower collapses. Kindergartens built prototypes along the way to test if their structure is solid and get instant feedback what works and what doesn't work.

    This simple experiment is so fascinating and the greatest take-away for me is when I face a challenge to go for it and self-correct along the way rather than think, plan, strategize, research for too long trying to avoid mistakes. Embrace mistakes and learn from them.

  8. Hi my name is Amit and I loved the coolest code in the world. Code is a game that you get smarter all the time. You can have a blast when you play code. So do you like it ? It also lets you decide how your animal or person goes. Sometimes there is some questions. There also is about a 2 minute video. The video tells you how to play. It is awesome !

    Bye !

  9. Hi Class, it's Carter! I went(verb) to the coolest(adj) place. It is called Dojo Boom. It's an indoor gym. There were big(adj) trampolines, rock climbing walls, obstacle courses, and more. I didn't think(verb) I could do the Warp Wall, but I finally did. It made me feel(verb)extremely(adv) proud about myself. Have you ever gone(verb) to Dojo Boom?

  10. Hello,This is Tyler.I love soccer.My favorite thing about soccer is that when you get hurt you get a free shot.I always make it.My friend Sam,Amit and i were on a team together. We had really good team work.When Sam or Amit mist a goal i did not be mean to them.I do not brag beacuse it hurts peoples feelings and makes them not want to play soccer anymore.The hardest team we played never lost in 5 years that is alot!
    When did you play soccer and what is your favorite part.

    love,
