What are Text Features?

Ms. Tulbure's class is learning about informational text

Informational text, or nonfiction writing, is based on facts, real events, and real people. There are many helpful text features found in nonfiction writing. Some common text features are:  headings, subheadings, captions, diagrams, timelines, maps, charts, table of contents, index, and the glossary.

In class, we used published informational texts as mentor texts.

Here are some headingsphotos, and captions.

Look closely. Here is a diagram and a heading

Here is a map with a key. I wonder what the arrows means? Check the key and it will unlock the meaning.

It's easy to stay organized. Just look at the Table of Contents for clues on chapters or in the glossary for meanings of words. The index will also help you find specific topics or guide you to answers to your questions.

  2. Hi this is Cameron.
I really like snow. I like it because it can be felt squishy, soft, rough, and more! Did you know that if rain and snow connect it becomes hail? I have seen snow a lot they can be found in cold places. Have you seen snow?

    Sincerely,
    Cameron

  3. Hi I'm Cyrus.
I went to Big Bear for my brother's birthday.
We played in the cold snow. The snow was so squishy, soft, rough. We arrived at 12pm , then we got a big cabin . My brother found a lot of toys in the cabin. We watched a famous movie in our cabin. Then we went to rent the big tube for sliding in the snow. My brother and I ran quickly to play in the snow. Did you ever go to Big Bear and what did you do?!

  4. Hi,
My name is Matthew. This summer is going to be amazing! I am going to the beautiful (adjective) state of Utah with my mother's (possession) whole family. The house we are going to stay in is called OTG or "off the grid". It has a huge (adjective) inside playground, a garden, a greenhouse, plus an indoor (adjective) jacuzzi. It also has a mini (adjective) movie theater, a pool table, a foosball table, and a room with three sets of cozy (adjective) bunk beds. We will be quickly (adverb) running (verb) from game to game so we can play everything many times. Since my cousins are going on the trip with us, I well get to sleep (verb) near them.
    Sincerely,
    Matthew
