Learning About Compound Sentences

Adding compound sentences to your writing can make your stories and essays more interesting.

What is a compound sentence?

*       *       *       *       *

A compound sentence:
  1. Combines two shorter sentences (so has TWO subjects)
  2. Joins the two sentences with a conjunction (and, or, but, so, yet, nor, and for)   The comma goes BEFORE the conjunction.

*       *       *       *       *

Here is an acronym to help you remember some conjunctions:
F A N B O Y S
(for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so)

For social studies, we have been reading a book called Badger Claws of Ojai. This realistic fiction story is about a Chumash boy who wants to become a brave. To prove he is worthy, he mustlive in the mountains for three moons, hunt a big game animal, and complete a service project for his community.

Here are some compound sentence examples that will tell you more about this great realistic fiction story.

Badger Claws could go and live with his aunt and uncle, or he could try surviving in the wilderness for three moon.

Badger Claws was a young boy, yet he was able to survive successfully in Little Matilha.

Old Silver Tip was stalking the women and children as they collected acorns, but Badger Claws was able to save the villagers.

  1. Dear Bloggers,
Global play day was the time of my life.I had a blast playing all sorts of games with my friends. My favorite game was Spots.Spots was a balancing game, you try to keep the sticks on top of each other untill the sticks fall.I brought in the game Twister and my friends and I played Twister but not everybody participated.Twister was also one of my favorite games,I won the first round and third round.Even though Twister was a game from the cave men days, every one still had a good time. A boy in my class brought a big bouncy ball. The ball was fun to play with on Global play day.It was all about games, and I loved it.My favorite game in the whole world is Malacca. It is really hard to learn but when you learn it, the game is pretty simple.
    What is your favorite game?

    Sincerely,
    Ryan

  2. Badger Claws could stay with his uncle or he could stay alone in a forest for three moons. I would If he stays alone in the forest for three moons he will go to home. He also has to kill a dear or bear and If he does that he can go to Matilha. If I was him, I would go to the forest and tried to do what Badger Clawsn of Ojai did.
It would be super hard to do that, but I could do that!

  3. Dear Bloggers,
I am happy to say that the last chapters of Badger Claws were spectacular and exciting, and I will share why with you . “How?” you may ask. Well in the last chapter, Badger Claws saw Old Silver Tip about to kill some children. Badger Claws was so brave that he shot Old Silver with an arrow repeatedly and killed him. “Whoosh!” went the arrow. Badger Claws finally became a Brave and avenged his father’s death. Another helpful thing Badger Claws did is dig a hole so the water would flow through the village, and the villagers would not need to go into the mountains to get the water. In conclusion, Badger Claws finally became a successful Brave!

  4. Dear bloggers,

Today I want to talk about how people think that all sharks are reptiles, but they are wrong because some species of sharks are actually mammals! You probably already know that some sharks lay egg cases and some of the baby sharks are born alive. Well, as you know, mammals don’t have eggs, their babies are born living, like humans. The sharks that have their babies born living are the ones that are classified as mammals. Also, you might think that all sharks are cold blooded, yet some are not, because if you think about it, they always have to move so they can breathe. The muscle in the shark’s tail is as strong as ten stunt men combined. When the tail is working it makes lots of energy and in turn that energy warms shark’s blood up. So if you thought that all sharks are mammals you are not correct.
Do you know any interesting facts about shark?
For a bonus question, what is a shark’s favorite food in the summer?

    Sincerely,
    Mark

  5. Dear Bloggers,

I’m excited to tell you some things about compound sentences because without them, everything would just be very boring. It’s good to say I like to swim. I like to play tennis, but, instead you can say - I like to swim, and I like to play tennis. Isn’t that better than having two sentences? Also, I have another compound sentence, I like compound sentences , and I like similes. See, there are lots of ways to play around with compound sentences! It’s as fun as jumping on a trampoline! Do you like compound sentences? I hope you do!

    Sincerely,
    Anya

  6. Dear Bloggers,

I thought the book Badger Claws was okay. I personally thought it needed more action.I wonder what our next book will be. I think compound sentences are easy as well as that compound sentences page for Badger Claws. It’s like a piece of cake.Did you think it was easy? If yes why was it easy for you and if no why not?

  7. I love blogging ,so I'm excited to do this blog post. One of my favorite things are dogs. Dogs were made from the wolf. The closest Dog to the wolf is the Samoyed they are all white fluffy and have a tail that is like a cotton ball that wraps around up to their back. Some Americans think The Border Collie is the smartest dog followed by the poodle and German Shepherd. Have you ever had a dog ,or know anything about dogs?

  8. Dear Class,

Compound sentences were exciting. Compound sentences were easy and fun.
Compound sentences were as uncomplicated as getting 5 cents. They were just BOOM easy.To me, compound sentences were fairly simple. Compound sentences are simple and nice. I liked compound sentences, but it was a lot of work learning about them. I thought that it was nice learning a new language arts. Did you like compound sentences? Was it effortless for you?

    Sincerely, Hyunsuh

  9. Dear Class,

I liked Badger Claws of Ojai because the character was brave, but I did not like the part where the bear got killed. This part made me feel sad because bears are living things. I enjoyed reading about Badger Claws’ bravery when he chose to go live in the wilderness for 3 months. This story reminded me of the time my family drove to Mammoth, and we were in the wilderness. One night we saw a bear when we were coming into our condo. The bear saw us and backed away. I thought it was funny, but it was scary at first. Have you ever stayed in the wilderness before? And if you have, what have you seen? Have you seen a bear?

    Sincerely,
    Sofia B.

  10. Dear Class,

On Sunday my father, mother, my siblings and I were in our car, AND we were driving to a restaurant. We were celebrating my BABY BROTHER’S BIRTHDAY. We went to Ruby’s Diner because it was right next to the AMC. For lunch I ordered a chocolate milkshake, mac and cheese, and fries. I thought my lunch was delicious. Some of Enzo’s friends came also. From our school there was Liam Scott, Alberto Marquez-Ambrose, and Danilo Petrovic. We told jokes and stories all lunch. It was so fun! After lunch, we went to AMC to watch The Jungle Book. My favorite part was when the monkeys grabbed Mowgli and brought him to King Louis. The scariest part was when the tiger, Shere Khan kept jumping out and frightening me. In my opinion, this MOVIE was MAGNIFICENT. I give it two thumbs up.

Have you seen The Jungle Book yet? What is your opinion about the movie?

    Sincerely,
    Sofia B.

  11. Dear 3rd Graders,

Hi! My name is the MARVELOUS MAGNIFICENT MAGICAL MAYA. I just wanted to check in with you guys. How are you? If you are asking me the same question I am good. In my class we have been learning about poems and compound sentences. In the beginning of this blog post you will see it says in bold and capital “MARVELOUS MAGNIFICENT MAGICAL MAYA” that is alliteration which is a type of poem. Do you know what a compound sentence? I do. A compound sentence is a sentence with more than one subject or predicate. For example: This house is too expensive, and that house is top small.’ Do you know another example for a compound sentence? Do you know another alliteration sentence? If so give me an example. I will promise to answer back.

    Sincerely,
    Maya
