Winter Season Wonder

In the Northern Hemisphere, winter is the
coldest season of the year.
It begins about December 21 and lasts until about March 21. Around December 21 or 22,
the sun's rays fall directly over the farthest point south of the equator - marking the first day of winter.
Winter days have fewer hours of daylight because of the path the earth takes as it revolves around the sun. The earth completely revolves around the sun during 365 days. The earth's axis always tips about 23 1/2 degrees from a line perpendicular to its path.

In the Southern Hemisphere, winter begins in June.
Different regions have longer winters than others. For example, in the polar regions, winter takes up half the year. In the Temperate Zones winter takes up about one quarter of the year.
In regions where there is cold weather, it causes many changes in the environment. Water may freeze and become ice, snow, sleet or icicles. Most plants and animals become dormant and rest.
Some animals hibernate.
The only plants that grow and remain green are evergreens.
People protect themselves from the cold climate with winter clothing when they go outdoors. They enjoy a variety of indoor activities or outdoor winter sports such as skiing, skating, or sledding.

I also like skiing in the winter. This winter I went skiing for the first time in Big Bear. The chair lift was exciting and loved it. I learned how to jump over the jumps.

When I was in Big Bear we were really lucky it was not too cold and the sun was shining.

Have you ever gone on the jumps?

It is fun to hear that you like to go skiing! I enjoy skiing in Idaho with my cousins. During the day, my favorite part about skiing is going off the trail and skiing through powder. Sometimes, I get stuck in the powder and I have to dig myself out. Usually, after a long day of skiing, my family will buy me a cup of hot chocolate and a candy bar. These treats are delicious and another one of my favorite parts of a regular ski day with my family. What is your favorite treat to have after being in the snow for a few hours?

      See you later,

I'm so glad you asked about the seasons. Winter is a blast with hot cocoa, warm sweathers, and cozy blankets. But, my favorite season is summer because of all the fun in the sun! First, I enjoy swimming in the cool pool and basking in the warm sun! Next, playing fetch with my dog named, Brinkley, or hoola hooping in my back yard are other activites that keep me busy during the summer months. Finally, hanging out with my baby sister, Morgan, is my favorite part of summer! What do you like about summer?

  22. Dear Ms. Tulbure's Class,

Greetings from Paris, France. Although I love your winter blog post, it is not my favorite season here in France. Winter is lasting too long in Paris. By some accounts we had only 30 minutes of sunlight in January! I miss California winters, where the sun was shinning all day long. In those days I only had to wear a cozy, warm sweater. This California flower is wilting. I hope the sun will greet me with its bright, warm rays soon.

    Your friend,
    Lorena
