Today, in science we learned about force. Force is a pushing or a pulling on an object. Students watched and listened as Doug from Mystery Science explained how engineers build bridges.
Doug presented various types of bridges:

Students worked in engineering teams to build their own bridge made out of two pieces of paper. Marbles were used to test their strength. The key to this experiment was to make mistakes, so that teams could observe what they needed to fix for their next time. In this manner, students really practiced growth mindset.
First, students tried out different types of bridges and noted their strength
Truss bridges:
Arch Bridges
And the winners were:
First place with a total of 60 marbles!
They created a lot of support for their truss bridge by crumpling up paper as a base
Second place- 18 marbles!
Everyone had a lot of fun learning to build bridges. We had a lot of ties!
What was a challenge you came across in your bridge building and how did you try to overcome it?
What other type of bridges will you try to build next and why?
Hi everyone it is Shea! Building bridges is really hard because when we did it we could only use paper and marbles ( and the marbles used to test it so it was only two peaces of paper) So it was really hard.Table three won they had 60 marbles! Have you ever made a paper bridge out of marbles and two peaces of paper?

"Tweet Tweet! hi i'm Enda!" " Hey don't forget about me!" "Oh yeah, that's Cenda. We are Caspian's sister's birds! We are very picky and we don't like being picked up or touched! Every day we wake up early and chirp...A LOT!Oh and trust me! We go to the bathroom about 10 times a day." "Yeah we make a mess." "To take care of us well, you must clean our water everyday! We like having a BIG cage.(And a lot of toys...)" Right now we live downstairs by the TV. Our owners bought us at "Pet Co" we are super cute! The food we eat are these little flakes. I don't know what they are but they are SOOOOOO YUMMY! "Hey Enda I'm gonna be famous one day!" "for what?" "Being a bird!" "Well, your already great at that."
ReplyDelete"Scratch Scratch! Oh,hi its me Rex! Again, but now i'm Izzy! it turns out the whole time I was really a girl! my diet is still the same but now i'm even bigger! Oh say... I think it was "Vanderlei" I herd you had two geckos, can you tell them I said hi?I would like to have a BIIIIIIIGGGGG conversation with them? what do they eat? Do they drink a lot of water?are they "proper" like me? Anyways, enough with the Questions, make sure they give me a call.(or a blog comment. I don't have a phone!) BYYYYEEEE!
ReplyDeleteThe bridges were fun to make. We were all engineers yet we were also using growth mindset and teamwork to build our bridges.1st place wow! 60 marbles i'm impressed! We only got
ReplyDelete18 marbles! Which bridge design did you go with ? What did
you do to make it stand up ?

Hi Alexa,
DeleteI'm one of the winners! It was very exiting and I thought your tables idea was cool! I'm very sorry you didn't win but you have to agree with me that it was fun. Our tables idea was to crumble up paper and put a bridge on top. Next time try putting more stuff under it so it's more stable.
I have to figure out how to try and win the next contest, so I've gotta go.
Your 'winner' Belana
Hi I'm one of the winners in first place Belana,
ReplyDeleteI really liked building the bridges.
I got my idea by smashing a piece of paper
I was angry that the poles were unwrapping so I smashed it with my fist, and that's how I got my idea!
When did you get a clever idea 'accedently' ?
Love Belana
Dear, EVERYBODY! Dolly did a fantastic job in the shows today thank you to: Carly,Dolly,Carter,Rebecca, and everyone else who took part in the show!I got to say,Sam and Dylan's act was SUPER funny! nobody saw me but I was really doing my best to not look like I was laughing!,The show was great and I personally think I could have done better.I also think everyone should get credit for the show. 1.the audience, why? because without our amazing audience the show would have been SUPER boring because then there would be no clapping! 2.the Hosts.why? because without the hosts the show would be a menace!I hope everyone had a good time. from, the one and only...CASPIAN
ReplyDeleteHello,I am Tyler i can not believe they got 60 marbles! We only got 18 and it was a lot of fun! we were only allowed to use two pieces of paper it was crazy! How many marbles did you get when you won it would be great if you told me more than 60.

Hi Tyler, I'm Amit I also had a BLAST! I was in Tyler's mega desk we were second place. That also make's a great connection because we were in table 2 The first even table in the class. We got 18 marbles like you said. Hope you had fun ? we used colorful and hard scissors. we used some of the papers so we can build paper walls. they could hold all the small marbles if they fall out.

Hello, my name is Matthew. Our team enjoyed building our bridge. Belana and Caspian crumbled (verb) one of the papers and we decided to use that for the base. We put the other paper on top of the base and very slowly and steadily (adv.) added 60 marbles. I really enjoyed this activity, thanks Ms. Tulbure for doing this fun (adj) activity!
ReplyDeleteSincerely,
Matthew
Hi class it is me Shea! Let me tell you about my weekend. So on Friday I woke up and I got ready for school. Then, when I came home I played and and spent time with my family. Saturday it was (verb) my uncle's engagement party. My mom did a really cool(adj) hair style she put pieces of fake hair in my hair and it was really long (adv) and we stayed up in till 2:00 in the morning! On Saturday we relaxed at the house.

Hi Class! I really liked the paper bridge Challenge!.
ReplyDeleteI really liked our paper bridge because we were so close to
beating "Team 2" I was in "Team 1". Our bridge was a simple (adj) design because all you needed was 2 pieces of paper! . Can we do it again?. Our bridge was very (adv) easy (adj) to build (verb).
Hi class, It's me Ariel! This week my big sister Athena got to come visit. She came from Rio Hondo Collage, which is an hour away.(adj) When she got here she gave me a kind and nice (adj)smile and hug (verb). We had a great time together. Do you have a big sister?
ReplyDeleteTHE END

All about Ava.I have a big sister and her name is Ava. She is ten years old and she is in 5th grade. She is really nice and kind. In school her favorite subject is math and science. And when she is out of school she likes to do science , Art, and cooking. Her favorite places to go are the beach and she LOVES Universal Studios. We have many things in common, we both like candy and candy makes us both crazy. Things we don't have in common, she likes to do stuff without me knowing. And that is all about my sister. Bye
DeleteHi class, over the weekend I had a play date with Caspian. He and I went to Magic Mountain theme park. One of the rides was Riddler's Revenge. You are standing up during the ride, which was really fun! There is also about 10 loops. It was my favorite, but I like all of them. Have you ever been to Magic Mountain?
