Happy Veteran's Day!

     ★          ★

On November 11, America celebrates Veterans Day. It is the day we honor the men and women who have served in the armed forces. Veterans Day is a national holiday!

Here is a link to a wonderful BrainPop video entitled
Armed Forces.

What did you learn about the
army, navy, air force, marines, and coast guard.

     ★          ★

To help us learn about Veterans Day and the men and women who serve,  I asked my students if any of their family members are in the military or were in the military. Meet our family of service members!

     ★          ★

Meet our district superintendent, Dr. Stepenosky. As you can see, he served in the Navy. He served from 1990 to 1994 on the USS Chancellorsville which was guided by a missile cruiser. The Chancellorsville weighed 9,000 tons and had a crew of 330 people.

     ★          ★

Here are Grant's two grandfathers. They both served in the military. Grant's "Papa Bill" served in the Army and was stationed in Germany.

Grant's "Popi" served in the Navy and was stationed on the battleship USS Wisconsin.

     ★          ★

This is Sam's dad, David.
He served as an Air Force Pilot. He was on active duty in Oklahoma from 1990-1997. Then, he served in the Air National Guard part time, in Louisiana from 1997-2003.

     ★          ★

Keira's uncle, Greg, is in the Army. He is a Colonel. He is on active duty of the U.S. Army currently assigned to Westpoint, NY.

     ★          ★

This is Alberto's uncle, Alexander. He served in the Army. He also received the honor of Soldier of the Year for the Army, and then received the rank of Sergeant. He served in the 1st Infantry Division, the Charlie Company 1st Battalion 18th Infantry from 2000-2003.  He was deployed to Germany, Kosovo, Macedonia and Bulgaria during his service.

To this day, Alexander goes to the airport once or twice a month to welcome soldiers coming back or going on tour of duty in the special zone where soldiers can rest while waiting for a flight at JFK airport in New York, NY.
His family is incredibly proud and honored by his service.

     ★          ★

Samantha's grandfather, Elzie  Jr. was in the US Army. He was in the 101st airborne branch known as the Screaming Eagles. He was based in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He was a Chief Master Sargent (E-6). He served in Subic Bay in the Philippines, in Okanawa, Japan, and in England.

Elzie was drafted during WWll and he served bravely in multiple areas of combat during the war. He continued to be enlisted and serve after the war.
He spent most of the 20s in Europe and then came home at the age of 30.
He continued to be active with the US government  his retirement in the 70s.
He returned home to the family farm and lived the remainder of his life.

     ★          ★

Today, we had a fabulous Veterans Day assembly. Students wore red, white, and blue, and we had some very distinguished guests. Fiveveterans came to our school and were honoredwith a presentation and a guitar solo of the Star Spangled Banner

The assembly started with the pledge. Notice the veterans who saluted, while others placed their right hand over their hearts.

One of the veterans was a non·a·ge·nar·i·an(nän ə jəˈ rē ən). A nonagenarian is a person who is between 90-99 years old. He is a WW II veteran.

Everyone wanted to thank the veterans for their service to America!

     ★          ★

Are any of your relatives or friends veterans?

Please tell us about them and thank them for their service to America!

  1. Hi, class!
    Happy Veteran's Day!
My uncle was in the army, and maybe I can get someone to give me a picture of him for our blog! I'm very excited to celebrate Veteran's Day, because I think it is a good idea to have a holiday for people in the army, and people who used to be in the army!
Are you related to someone in the army? And if you are, what is their name, and are they your uncle, aunt, grandparent, parent, or anyone else?
    Sincerely,
    Mikayla.

  2. Hi class,
I like Veteran's Day! I like it because my grandpa was in the ARMY! Also my other grandpa was in the NAVY. I like all the activities we do, like the blog and learning about the Air-Force and the Military. Veteran's Day is important because we celebrate all our Veterans and thank them for all their hard work.

    1. Dear Grant,
I don't have anyone who was in the army, but my parents came from Asia and it has future almost. They have high
tech which means they can make a steel that is silent so the plane wouldn't be attacked at first. Asia is also the factory place so there is fog everywhere due to the pollution from the working machines. They were born in Hong Kong which I am About go to. Tell me about the history of your grandpa and how it was?

      Kindly,
      Skyler

    4. Hi Grant,
I think it is quite commendable that both of your grandfather's served in our armed forces, it is quite a sacrifice to make for our great country. I wonder who you root for in the annual Army versus Navy football games? It would be a tough choice I'd imagine!
      Best,

    1. Hi Samantha,
You must be very proud of your cousins and your grandpa for the service they offered our great nation. It must be hard not having him around, but know your grandpa must have been very brave going into war. It takes courage and conviction to defend your country with your life. That is why it is important that we also honor the soldiers we have lost on Memorial Day. Thank you for telling us about your family.
      Best,
      Elita

    2. Hi, Samantha!
      I like Veteran's Day too,
the first reason is because lots of people in my family were in the armed forces.
I am very sorry that your grandpa died, but I am sure he was a great dad for your dad, (he could have been your mom's dad too, but I am not very sure.) and a kind person.

What is your favorite thing to do while it is Veteran's Day?
      Sincerely,
      Mikayla.

    1. Hi Keira,

You must be very proud of your uncle! A Colonel is a high ranking officer and they are in charge of other officers in the lower ranks. It takes a lot of hard work and discipline to become a Colonel in the Army. Do you think you might want to join the military when you grow up?

      Best,
      Elita

    2. Hi, Keira!

What is your favorite thing to do while you are in Florida?
      Sincerely,

I have no one in the army, but My parents came from Asia and it is a very high tech place and guess what theres this thing called the octopus card and it does all transportations. Instead of paying you just swipe the card and go on the transportation that your taking and some people even put it in the back pocket and then swipe it and then BOOM you are done. So high tech things and I am going to Japan and they sell
the best mechanical pencils ever so do you want me to buy you one or not? How is your dad doing on the airline?

    1. Dear Grant,

When I was younger, I was a cadet for the Civil Air Patrol, which was an Air Force Auxiliary. We were trained to do search and rescue on downed airplanes in the mid-west. I held the rank of executive officer which helped maintain the unit's supplies and activities. It was a fun time since we got to go onto Air Force bases and get to ride in military planes, like the C130 transport. Are you in any organizations like that? Kindly Skyler's Dad

  18. Dear Ben,

There is a long history of military service in your family about which you should know. I will start with Papa Roger's side of the family.

Your grandfather, Papa Roger, was a lieutenant in the US Army. Lieutenants are officers. He went through something called ROTC training while he was in college to become one. He expected to serve in the Korean War, but by the time he was done with his training, the war in Korea was over. He served the remainder of his time in the Army during peace time.

His father, your great grandfather, was not as lucky, but he was very fortunate. He was also in the US Army. He served during WWI and survived. I don't know much more than that because he didn't speak about it much to Papa Roger. I never met your great grandfather because he passed away long before I was born. I am named after him - he and I share the exact same name.

Your Nana Jacky's father and both of her uncles were also in the military. They were all in WWII. Your great grandfather was named John, but went by Jack. He died during WWII, but both of his brothers survived. You have met both of them. One was your Uncle Jimmy who was in the Navy, but you won't remember him because you were too young. The other was your Uncle George who will always be a US Marine. Uncle George and Aunt Vee, his wife, came to our house many times. Both Uncle George and Uncle Jimmy served in the South Pacific "theater." You will learn a lot about it eventually.

Nana Jacky also had a brother (Micheal) who served in the US Army during Vietnam. Nana Jacky said that before he went to war he was a happy-go-lucky guy, but being in Vietnam changed him. He didn't speak much about his experience there. I have several wonderful memories of him... but my favorite is about an epic water-balloon fight when I was about your age.

You also have an Uncle David who is a US Marine. He also served during Vietnam. His job was as a Door Gunner on helicopters. He would keep his fellow Marines safe as they got on and off the choppers. He likes to talk about his service and if you want to ask him questions, you can.

I will save the stories of the women in our family who also served our country during WWII - one was even on your mother's side of the family in Italy!

All of your family that served in the armed forces were very brave and strong as were the people with whom they served and the men and women who continue to serve our nation. We must always be grateful to them and keep them in our hearts and memories.

    -Dad
