Here is a link to a wonderful BrainPop video entitled
Armed Forces.

What did you learn about the
army, navy, air force, marines, and coast guard.

To help us learn about Veterans Day and the men and women who serve,  I asked my students if any of their family members are in the military or were in the military. Meet our family of service members!

Meet our district superintendent, Dr. Stepenosky. As you can see, he served in the Navy. He served from 1990 to 1994 on the USS Chancellorsville which was guided by a missile cruiser. The Chancellorsville weighed 9,000 tons and had a crew of 330 people.

This is Abby's Pops. His name is Charles and he was a Captain in the Navy. He also spent years working at the Pentagon. He went to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. He is now retired and living in Maryland with his wife Yvon (Mimi).
What is the Pentagon? Where is it located?

This is Abby's Pop Pop. He was an F-14 pilot in the Navy. He retired as a Commander and was in one of the first graduating classes of Top Gun, an elite training school for naval aviators. He will be visiting us next week from Arkansas. His call sign was Crash. He never crashed an airplane though.

This is Helena's Uncle Matt. He serves in the Navy. He is stationed in Virginia Beach. Helena and family had the pleasure of vacationing in Italy where he was stationed for 3yrs. Sometimes he gets shipped out for over a month. That can be difficult for him because he doesn't get to see his family and friends. Helena's great-grandfather served as a Marine in WWII. Her mom's uncle Jerry served as a Marine in Vietnam. They are proud to serve their country. Helena and her family are proud of them also. We thank them for their service and contributions

This is Collin's maternal great grandfather Fred. He was a medic in the US Army and served in WW2. He served for the entire war. He was born in Germany and came to the U.S. right before his mother and sister were sent to the Jewish ghettos.  He was used as an interrogator later because he spoke German, French and English.  It is hard to imagine escaping a country, knowing your family that stayed behind may not be alive, and then being sent back to that country to fight against them.

Are any of your relatives or friends veterans?

Please tell us about them and thank them for their service to America!

  1. In honor of Veteran's Day I am going to tell you about my Great Grandpa. He was in the Army during WWII. When he was in training he was recruited (enrolled) for an advanced program. This meant more training while the rest of his unit went to Europe and fought in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium, France. Many of them did not make it back. My great grandpa never fought in the war which was fortunate for me because I might not be here today otherwise.

  2. Hello everyone,

    It is me, Hyunsuh
    Tomorrow is...is...Veterans Day!
That also means no school too.
My dad was in the Korean military too.
I wish to be in the air force because you get to fly a jet with guns and missiles.
Wow,I can just picture a military jet. Can you picture one in your head?
My mom said that in Korea when you're 18 or 20 years old you HAVE to go to the military.
    Fun Fact:
Did you know that the Korean War started in 1950?
Also I am a Korean person.
I kinda have to stop writing now 'cause I'm kinda tired.

  3. Hi, it’s Mark. It’s Veterans Day! Dear classmates, you for the wonderful posts about veterans in your families. My maternal great grandfather, Vladimir, was a veteran too who served the Army as a partisan in 1944 during World War ll. A partisan was someone who secretly fought the opposing force, German army. Vladimir was at the age of fifteen when he joined the World War ll. When he became a partisan, he helped the troops by providing food for them and spying on German soldiers. He also helped with delivering messages between troops, bandaged wounded, and did many other helpful things. At the end of the war, they recognized him to be small but very brave and gave him a medal for bravery and courage. He never fought for America because he lived in Moldova near Ukraine, that was a part of the former Soviet Union. Since Vladimir was in the war, he was honored as a veteran of WW ll.
My other paternal great grandfather, Phillip, also served in World War ll as a Private in Odessa, Ukraine. He helped to free his hometown and received multiple medals for it. I’m very proud of my family and hope that we can all live in peace and not war.
Are any of your relatives veterans? What they do to earn that honorable title?

    Sincerely,
    Mark

  4. My dad's cousin is also currently in the air force. He used to fly F-14 fighter jets, then he trained pilots. Now he works in the office, still with the navy. He worked for a while in the Pentagon which was very top secret and no one could know what he did.

Does anyone in your family have someone that worked in the Pentagon?

  5. Dear Ms. Tulbure,
Maya’s dad, Daniel and his brother Uri both served in the Israeli Defense Forces.
Maya’s dad, Daniel is in Air Force uniform on his graduation day for the officers academy. His brother who is 2 years older than him is in field uniform for the intelligence division of the army.
They each served for around 4 years.

In Israel service is mandatory for both man and women. Men serve for 3 years and women for 2.
I myself was in service for a little under 2 years in the air force intelligence but unfortunately couldn’t find a photo in uniforms.

The military service is actually were me and Maya’s dad met almost 20 years ago.

    Sincerely,
    Maya's Mom

  7. Hello! It's me Audrey R. I've been hearing a lot of your comments. But today I'm here to ask all of you guys in Ms. Tulbure's class if you know this: On Veterans Day Americans honor all living military veterans, including the many working moms who are veterans of the military service. Did you know that?

    Love

  8. Hi,
This is Abby's Mom. My dad served in the military as you saw the picture above. He worked at the Pentagon which is in Washington D.C. He captained the ship USS Haleakala, an ammunition ship. Does anyone know what that means?
I love seeing everyone appreciate the military all over the world. Veteran's Day is a great day to reflect, but we should appreciate everyday for all the freedoms that we enjoy.
    Sincerely,
    Debbie (Abby's Mom)
