Artful Artists

Last week, our art teacher took us on a journey back in time to explore some prehistoric art.  We spent the entire art lesson in a cave learning all about the ancient artists, cave painters!

Our third grade artists learned about ancient techniques dating back to the Paleolithic, or Old Stone Age, era. This era ranged from 30,000 BCE to 10,000 BCE. Artists looked at examples from spectacular cave paintings found in southern France. Themes that inspired this creativity included nature and animals such as bulls and deer. Hunting was also a common subject featured on ancient walls.

Take a look below at our experience and our representation of Paleolithic art.

Research "cave painting" using Worldbook Online. Share what you learned. Remember, never copy and paste. Instead, take notes and write your own original sentences.

What type of paint did the artists use
during the Paleolithic Era?

What are some of the most famous sites of cave painting
and when were they discovered?

What has been your favorite art project so far this year and why?

  1. Hi,
I just learned a lot of information about cave paintings in Paleolithic era. These paintings
are found in the continents of Africa, Asia, North and South America, Europe, and
Australia. The most famous cave paintings were found in France in Lacraux Grotto.
The paintings were discovered on September 12th 1940 and have a bull and horse on it. Scholars think that it was painted 17,000 years ago by late Paleolithic humans who
used charcoal, manganese, calcite, and red and yellow ucher.
I really enjoyed making cave paintings in Art class, but my favorite activity was coloring
our hand prints. I liked that the most because we got to create other colors from the three basic ones.
What cave painting is your favorite? What did you like in Art the most?
    Sincerely,
    Mark

  3. Hello,
I loved the experience of what it might just be like in a real cave when it is all dark. You can't just flip a switch to have light so you'd have to make a fire and then put the fire on a stick to make a torch to see. I think for their food most of it came from growing crops and hunting . I think for fun they painted and made toys for the little ones made out of bone rope and stick.
Do you have different opinions let me know?

    Sincerely,
    Sammy

  4. Dear Fellow friends,

Hi! My name is Sarah and I am going to talk about how lucky we are to be able to go to stores to get markers and colored pencils for drawing. In the olden days cave men were not able to get markers and colored pencils. They had to make their materials. It is a little gross but they had to do it. They used: Blood from animals, berries, and yes also dirt. Think about it. How would you feel if you had to use blood and berries?
    What do you feel?
    Sincerely, Sarah

  6. Hello Everyone,
It's Maya and we are very very lucky if you want to know why then let me tell you. We are very lucky because we have paint but some people don't. Cavemen or women had to use blood, berries and even dirt. That's disgusting! By the way my favorite art project was when we got to trace our hand and put the primary colors in the hand and around you would put the secondary. What was your favorite art project?
    Sincerely,
    Maya
