Autumn Equinox:: Au Revoir Summer!

FACT: Seasons change as we orbit the sun.

SpringSummerAutumnWinter

Twice a year, around March 20 or 21 and Sept. 22 or 23, our sun shines directly over the equator. That event marks the beginning of spring or fall. What is the equator?

Public Domain photo

e·qua·tor
[əˈkwā•dər]
noun
an imaginary line drawn around the earth equally distant from both poles, dividing the earth into northern and southern hemispheres and constituting the parallel of latitude 0°.

In March when the sun shines directly over the equator, the event is called the spring or vernal equinox. In September when the sun shines directly over the equator, the event is called the fall or autumnal equinox.

The Autumnal Equinox occurred in Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. on Wednesday, September 23, 2015. at 1:22 A.M.

Things to look for in fall:

1. Deciduous (di•si•jo͞o•əs) trees will change color and drop all their leaves. Evergreen trees will not. Evergreen trees will stay forever green. :-) Why do the leaves of deciduous trees change color? Use World Book Online to research. Remember, do NOT copy sentences. That is plagiarism, and it is against the law! Take notes, and then turn your notes into your own sentences.

2. On the equinox, there are exactly 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night. The day and night hours are equal. However, as we continue into fall, the days will get shorter and the night hours will get longer. This pattern will continue until we reach the winter solstice. That is the longest night of the year and marks a new season, winter.

3. Because the northern hemisphere is now tilted away from the sun, the days will start to become cooler. People will change their behavior. What sorts of behavioral changes will your family make as the days get shorter and cooler? (In southern California, we have mild climate. We don't get too cold in our community.)

There are many fall festivals or holidays. Watch the BrainPop video about fall to learn about the many harvest festivals celebrated. Do you celebrate any of these autumn holidays? If so, please share so we can learn from you!

4. Some animals in the northern hemisphere will change their behavior. As fall leads to winter, some animals migrate, or move, to a warmer area. Others try to fatten up for the winter they know is coming.

Share some fun facts about fall!
Did you use BrainPop or World Book Online as a reference?

If you are in the southern hemisphere, tell us what season you are enjoying! How are you changing your behavior?

  3. Hi, it's Mark. I am so glad it's finally fall, however, as you all know, it is still as hot as in summer. My favorite part about fall is that the weather is cooling down and that the leaves are turning red, yellow, brown, and orange before they fall off the trees. Did you know, Autumn Equinox was on September 23rd this year? That means that day and night on that day were exactly the same 12 hours long. After that day, the days started getting shorter and shorter and the nights longer and longer. I just learned on Brain Pop that farmers harvest their pumpkins in fall. I also go to the pumpkin patch with my family every year to buy pumpkin of different shapes and sizes. My family enjoys carving the pumpkins and then putting them on the front porch with a lit candle inside for Halloween night.
If I were to live in the Southern Hemisphere, like in Australia for example, it would be spring and the days would be getting longer and the nights would be getting shorter. I would be putting my Winter jackets away and looking for blossoming flowers.
What is your favorite season? Which hemisphere would you like to be in?
    Sincerely,
    Mark

  4. Hi this is Collin - Tonight we went out to look for the lunar eclipse. We drove all around and couldn't see it. It was hidden behind the hills or the clouds. Finally it came out at about 8. It was still hidden by clouds, but I could see it a little bit. It was reddish whiteish and orangish. Then we went home and got binoculars and tried again. The moon was white with the binoculars, but reddish without it.

  7. Hello,
    Anya speaking,

I wanted to write a blog post because I really want to talk about the Blood Moon- Super Moon. I am glad that I saw it because it hasn't happened for 20 years and won't for another 18 years. So I will have to wait till I am 26 years old until the next Blood Moon! I couldn't see it clearly since it was cloudy. I was very disappointed because we are in California, and California is almost NEVER cloudy, but since this is a fall theme, I will tell you three reasons why I like fall:

    1. Cuddle up!
    2. Sweet aroma of cinnamon.
    3. Catching LOTS of leaves!

Those are three reasons why I like fall, (even though I like summer more).
I would love to hear what you like about fall.

I showed my whole family then I jumped for joy and threw them all outside. I also made breakfast for my parents every morning. That is not everything I did in fall I did way more.

Our favorite candy is: Twix, Sour patch kids, Kit kats, Nerds, and many more. But the best candy we had ever tried is Sweet Tarts. The sugar rang is 50 calories. We love candy so much! It fills our mouths with joy.

  22. Hi,it's me again,

It's passed only 2 days from Halloween.
I got 4 pounds of candy,
    what about you?
    It was fun trick-or-treating.
    Although I was EXTEREMLY thirsty.
I had to say "a spy" a billion times because they kept asking what my costume was.
I didn't get ANY sour skittles though.(read the other comment).
But what I did get was a king size starburst.
I didn't like the houses that only gave snickers and M&Ms.
    I don't like reeses either.
    How was your Halloween?Happy,sad,angry?

  23. Hey everyone,
It was Halloween this past weekend. I was a scary cheerleader and everyone loved my costume and my make-up. I had black around my eyes and my face was covered in white! I got lots of candy and I can't stop eating it. My favorite candy is M&Ms and one of my favorite holidays is Halloween because of all the treats. Candy makes me go bananas, and I also get to spend the night with friends and get stay up late! What is your favorite holiday?

I really liked your post. You mentioned that you dressed up as a cheerleader and a lot of people loved your costume. For
Halloween I was Luigi ad my friend was Mario. My sister was a scary witch for Halloween. When I was trick or treating we went to this house. When I rang the doorbell , I saw these teenagers at the door, holding a basket full of big candies! I got big snickers and my sister got these big Kit Kats and my friend got big skittles. My favorite candies are kit Kats, Mike and Ike, M n M's, tic tacks, candy corn, nerds and nerd ropes, sour patch and sour punch, gummy bears and gummy worms, juicy drop pops, and finally juicy drop taffies. My Two favorite holidays are Christmas and Thanksgiving. I like Christmas because you get to get whatever you want. I like Thanksgiving because you get to have a big feast and in Thanksgiving it is my birthday. Those are two reasons why I like Christmas and Thanksgiving.
Did you get a big candy for Halloween?

It's me again! Well just a week ago it was 90 degrees, and now it is pouring outside and chilly! My witch that is still in my yard got soaking wet!!! Did you guys get soaked? I did! Have you guys ever been in snow before?
Last winter I went to New York and it was snowing the whole time! I got to make snow angels, and had a snow ball fight with my brother! My cousins who live in New York have snow days, but since I live in Southern California, I guess I won't get any snow days. Have you ever made snow angels?

There are water taxi's that drive around in the water in Long Beach and also in Newport Beach. Have you been on one of those before? They are really fun.

  25. Hi Everyone,

    It's me again,Hyunsuh.
It rained today, but thankfully I had brought a jacket to school.
Now this jacket was not that much ordinary though.
    Why is it not ordinary?
That's because the outside of the hoodie is waterproof.
Also the inside of the hoodie was furry.
    Though I still got drenched.
Today was the BEST day ever because I got my acer(laptop).
Still we don't get to take them home yet.
I wonder if my mom will let me download a game.
Do you have your very own acer?

    Now it's November 4th.
That not only means blogging month but also Thanksgiving.
On Thanksgiving my family doesn't really do anything.
    Turkey legs taste delicious.
Turkey breast etc. don't taste as good.
I don't like mashed potatoes either way.
I get only interested in dessert.
The dessert is usually just ice cream.
    I like popsicles better.
What is your favorite part of Thanksgiving?
    What type of that favorite?

I would say it's going pretty well.
The trees in my backyard have not changed leaf color.
    How interestingly weird.
The leaves are plain old green.
I have a hill in my backyard and not even the trees up there have changed a bit.
Only a few leaves have turned yellow.
How many of your leaves have changed color?

With your dark brown eyes, your little nose, your tiny hands that shake when you write and last of all your tiny, little feet that waddle like a penguin when you walk in the house. Even when we fight you are still a perfect little angel that is just not so happy at this moment but you will bounce back.

I am so sad Halloween is over but also happy because my feet where hurting so bad from all the walking I thought I was going to scream . My sister was going to be dressed up as a weeping angel, but my sister's feet were hurting, so my sister went as a baby instead. The funny thing is my sister is 12 years old. My brother went as a ware wolf. It was such a surprise that I didn't run away. Now I have a new favorite candy. It's called Sour Patches but they are not really sour. What is your

If you think sour patch is not sour, try war heads or extreme sour patch.
Once when I ate a war head I really had a war in my head!
      Isn't that crazy?!
Extreme sour patch is medium on sourness.
When I ate extreme sour patch it was deffinitly not as sour as war heads.

I am so sorry your mom broke her leg. I know how that feels. I broke my elbow in kindergarten and had surgery. When I came back to school everybody want- ed to sign my cast. I knew lots of first graders so I had lots of names on my cast. I was very sad because I could not play soccer. I hope you did not. Having a cast stinks. Have you ever had surgery?

    3. Dear Ryan,
Thank you for replying. You asked if I had surgery. I have had surgery on my leg because I once broke my leg by skydiving. I tried to open my parachute up in the sky but I accidentally opened it near the ground and I was going too fast and I put out my feet to land but then I fell hard on my leg. I was in real pain and then the medics came running toward me and they said that I broke my leg and they put me in the ambulance and drove me to the hospital and the doctor said that I need a cast. I got to choose the color of my cast which was green and I got crutches and the doctor said he would teach me how to walk with them. By the way I broke my fibula. What bone did you break?

Can you guess what day it is?
    Yup it's Nov. 5th.
I like it when guests come over on Thanksgiving.
Last year I was a little shy,but a few minutes later I wasn't shy at all.
At midnight the guests left and our house.
Our house looked as if a tornado had hit my house.

Last year's turkey tasted a little bad.
